YIKES! Where does it go? I now have about 3,000 miles on the new GS and the only thing I still need is a new comfy seat. My “tail bone”….what’s the name for that bone?…coccyx? Yeah, that’s it. My coccyx takes a beating on the bike and after a couple hundred miles I find it very tender and painful to sit down on anything, no matter how soft. I rode the bike last Sunday about 60 miles down to the BMWMOGA clubs annual shrimp boil and election meeting, and that’s about the limit of my riding until I get a new seat. My choices are between the infamous ultra-comfortable tractor seat that Russell builds, a close facsimile by an offspring of the Russell seat creator, Rick Mayer, his brother Bill Mayer, Cee Bailey, or Don Weber of Mr. Ed’s Moto, who builds custom seats in Oregon. The others are in California.

The Russell is just too wide and looks wrong for my bike. I read a bad report on the Cee Bailey I’m leaning toward Don Weber just because he’s a really nice guy, and there have been reports about the other guys’ personalities being hard to deal with if there’s a problem with the seat. His custom seat costs $450…which is a LOT of money for a seat. But if it is comfortable and allows me to enjoy my rides for many miles, then it will be worth it. I just have to ship my seat to him and then pay to have it shipped back. (additional expense)

I could go with just an aftermarket seat like Sargent or Corbin, but I’m not convinced they would be a whole lot better than what I have now. So I’m going with a “so-called” custom seat build, and if it doesn’t work I’ll send it back for re-working until they get it right.

I didn’t get elected to any office in the club. I was a write-in for all positions, it appears, and the new President elect has asked me to be an additional Director on the new Board of Directors. So I do get my hand in it a little this year.
