I’ve been tossing it back and forth for some time…even before I got this new bike. Getting a custom seat built, that is. Back when I had the little F650GS Thumper I wanted to get one but just had a feeling I wouldn’t be keeping the bike so I opted to get a local upholsterer redo my seat for the big ride out to Wyoming. I couldn’t have ridden that far otherwise.
What I really wanted was a custom seat built just for me and my very own butt.
I’m doing that now, and its even more critical than before because I plan to keep this bike for a long time and as much as I like to ride in the summer, it will be well worth it.

I priced several seat options. Bill and Rick Mayer, brothers and both in California, have a reputation for making good seats, but I have heard some negative comments in the internet community regarding their personalities and sometimes being hard to get along with. I have spoken to Don Weber at Mr. Ed’s Moto on a couple of occasions and he is one of the nicest and most patient guys I’ve dealt with. Even though his seat is a little higher priced than a Mayer saddle, I just felt better about dealing with him. Plus, he’s been making motorcycle seats since 1965. He knows what he’s doing!
I’ll send it off tomorrow and when it arrives at his shop he will telephone me and discuss every detail and what I expect. Then it will be in his shop for a week and then he’ll send it back to me. I really can’t wait! I’m very excited and so is my butt!
